For many years I have had my own domains and web sites, mostly for personal use and not business. When I was learning to use PHP and MYSQL, I started writing my own content management system while building web sites for friends and family in Atlanta and other places.

I needed something that I could use to design web sites and would allow me to have an administration back-end that I could log into on the web. This admin area would allow me to create new pages dynamically, edit an events/calendar page, a blog, etc. All of this needed to happen dynamically to make it easy for anyone using it on the web, to update their web site.

Over time I had created something pretty useful and it was making my life easier, but it was a lot of upkeep. Adding new functionality, maintaining security, and keeping the code clean were some of the things that were taking up more time than I was interested in giving over to this project.

So I started looking around. The biggest players at the time were probably Joomla, Drupal , DotNetNuke, and WordPress. There are many others, but those are what I was seeing the most. While they are each very functional and scalable, I found that WordPress stuck out like a sore thumb.

Clean Code

The WordPress code, by default, is pretty clean. It can be tweaked even more depending on your needs. For instance, a great theme framework to use if you want the cleanest, fastest code, is the Thesis Theme Framework. Using clean code helps with cross browser functionality, search engine optimization, and any new developers you bring on to your team.

Easy Administration Area

This has not always been a WordPress claim to fame, but the newest admin layout is smart and intuitive. Making changes to any area of your website is now easier than ever while some of the other content management systems out there still have quite a bit of work to do on this topic.

WordPress is offered up for free under the GPL License which means that anyone can use it. Much of the upkeep done on the code is done by volunteer developers all over the world. There are several right here in Atlanta that have headed up some major overhauls to the WordPress system.
