Basic On Page Search Engine Optimization – SEO 101 – Lesson 2

by Bret Phillips

SEO 101 Lesson 1 was an overview of what Search Engine Optimization (SEO) actually is.  In lesson 2, I will review some easy things you can do to increase your On-Page SEO.  If you are using WordPress, performing these tasks is quite simple and we are going to use WordPress for this example.

For this video, I will use the same example that I used last week with the keyword phrase “an excellent example of SEO basics.”  Since we already know our keyword phrase, we can skip doing any keyword research and dive right in to the fun stuff.

What’s in a Title?

Start by giving your page a title. For this example, I used our exact keyword phrase.  You should also place the title inside of an h1 html tag. WordPress does this for you automatically, but if you are building a page yourself, be sure to keep that in mind, as it serves as the first signal to search engines that your page contains information relevant to your keyword phrase.

All Hail King Content!

Now that you have a title, you need some content on the page, or the search engines will not deem your page relevant to the keyword phrase you have chosen. As a general rule, shoot for at least 500 words or so on each page.  Content is king, so having more than that will not harm your search rankings, but at the very least, you should try to get around 500 words.

When you are writing your content, be sure to keep your keyword phrase in mind, but you do not have to fill your article with your keyword phrase over and over again. Instead, you want to try and use it about 5% throughout. Typically, if you just write naturally on your topic you will come close to this. After you have finished the article, you should go back through it and assess just to be sure.

In your article, you should mention your keyword phrase in the first sentence if you can.  At the very least, be sure that it appears somewhere in the first paragraph. You should place the keyword somewhere toward the end of your article. If you have written it properly, the keyword phrase will be scattered throughout the rest of the article as well.

Touching Up

Once your content is fleshed out, you can use the bold and underline tags to emphasize that the content is relevant to your keyword phrase.

Go back to your first mention of your keyword phrase and bold the entire thing.

Next go to your last mention of your keyword phrase and underline the entire thing.

There are many more on-page efforts you can take to help your website’s SEO, but what you have just read is the foundation. Keep these simple steps in mind for any keyword rich article, page, or post that you create. You will be well on your way to high rankings.

In the next Search Engine Optimization post, we will be going over the use of Meta Tags and how they can help your page rank high in the search engines, so stay tuned.
